It's got to be 'Canadian', eh? .... Locate it somewhere relatively remote and suitably challenging .... Make it 'the world class place to go' if you really want to work up your battle group for a significant patrolling operation.

All kidding aside, I've been told some Reg Force recce patrolman courses have been run in this part of the world, and all were surprised at how challenging the conditions were.  That's why (in addition to my shameless parochialism) I offered it up as an option.

Northern Ontario might be too small for a distinctively "Canadian/Canadien" LRRP experience. I'm sure these guys would think of a patrol limited to that chunk of geography as just a bit of a warmup, as well as economically limiting:

.... and don't forget the gigantic wolves. We followed this one about half way across the traverse from Qik to Pang. We never saw him, but marveled at the plethora of slaughtered waterfowl he left in his wake. I wear an 11 1/12 boot. Looks like he could too.

I believe you - when I was in Eureka, the local pack used to visit us on the flightline sometimes...I got a pic of one that probably stood at least 3 1/2 - 4ft  at the shoulder...will have to look for it at my other home when I go back at Xmas.

I was on Broughton Island in I think 99 - when I got back to Frobisher, there was a story in the local rag about a Digger that was stalked for 6 days through Auyuituqq Park by a big honking polar bear.  I'd love to be collecting the fees as his therapist - he's probably still seeing a shrink 3-4 times a week judging by how discombobulated he sounded in the paper.

It may not be Montreal-to-Thunder Bay, but ~500km through northern Ontario (from the end of the all-season road to Hudson or James Bay) would prove to be a bit of a satisfying yomp for any size group.

Jim - I'm not sure which brigade sent the bulk of the troops, but two friends from my regiment made the team. I was under the impression that normally a reserve and a Reg force team were sent, but I guess that wasn't the case this year?

Nothing like a 200 km recce/fighting patrol in the arctic...to work out the bugs in your SOPs! 

As a troop-a-loop, I kinda get tingly-excited at the prospect of this. I am fully aware that if I was on said patrol, I would probably be cursing myself for being originally excited though.

I think it was 41 Bde that sent it, but the team was made up of Reservists from all three LFWA Res Bdes.

Sorry for the late response...confirmed at stand down the Cambrian team was from across LFWA, with only two members from 39 CBG. The regiment is focusing on, among other things, the "patrolling spirit" this year and workng on bringing that back into the rifle companies.
