How does one download videos from sites such a youtube and the like?

you need a program or plug-in that can save embedded flash video files.
You'll also need to find a program that can play them.

This website allows you to download videos from youtube and many other video sites (google video, myspace, metacafe etc).

It saves them as a .flv file, so you'll need a program that can play that type of file.  I use this one.

Great all purpose video/DVD Player - Media Player Classic

Free, and open source.

You may need to download video codecs to play anything and everything though.

A good online site for downloading vids from youtube and many other sites  is http://keepvid.com/ .  Total Video Converter fromhttp://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/ is an excellent piece of software that coverts .flv files to other types of video files. It's free for 15 days and not expensive to buy, about CDN $50. There are a few totally free converter software apps out there, but you should run Adaware and Spybot S&D after installing to make sure they don't come with spyware.
