I need to clear something up with anyone here who is with the RCMP.  I was a firefighter professionally for 8 years. I just quit, and was that ever a waste of my time. Talk about mind turning to jello. Anyways, I needed 20/30 in my worst eye uncorrected. That is a lot harder than the RCMP.I had 20/40 in one eye and 20/16 in the other. I have amblyopia in the bad eye. It is called a lazy eye. This means the eye is perfect, but my brain doesn't process all the light signals properly. It's kind of like only part info. It is not blurry and it is completely uncorrectable. I went to an optometrist and he said it was borderline 20/30, 20/40. I begged him and he wrote a note for 20/30. I failed the city test through a device you look through. I produced a note and he said that if I passed the eye chart then he would pass me.He said that my note was lovely, but it wasn't from a specialized physician that was qualified to overrule his findings. Well I made it, but it wasn't exactly through doing the test honestly. O.K., the application process will say, do I wear glasses- answer, no.  Have I had surgery, no.  Uncorrected, I am going to get 20/40 in the left eye, and 20/16 in the other.  Do I pass or not?? There are no glasses to wear to make it better. Who does the eye exam, the RCMP or a specialist I pick. I need to know in advance, because I can patch my eye and by exercising my brain, it will improve slightly, not 20/30, but close.

We're not doctors and can't speak for the RCMP recruiters, you'll have to take your chances with them. I'm also not comfortable dealing with someone who wants to be a Queen's Cowboy and has already admitted to cheating twice before even speaking to them.

I would like to clear up a few things. First off I pledge my oath to Canada. The queen means nothing to me, and the RCMP recruiter even talked about that. I never cheated. The optometrist said the results were on the border. Considering what the test was for, he chose to pass it. If the results were altered, it was not by me. Secondly, I did not cheat the doctor, he just felt that the result was too close not to give it to me. I missed one letter on the 20/30 line.

Where does the vision test come from, them or my specialist. If them, do they use eye charts or something else?

Well I made it, but it wasn't exactly through doing the test honestly

Should we take this any other way?  ::)

We've also already said we can't answer these questions. Only the RCMP recruiter can. Ask them, not us

I called the medical adviser for recruitment "E" Div., and I explained all about my vision being uncorrectable, at 20/16, right eye and 20/40 the other. I explained that this was as good as it gets and glasses won't fix anything. She said as long as both eyes were 20/60 at worst and binocular was 20/100, and colour was good, then no problem. I asked if she was sure and she verified the document. Hoping for the best, she said I'm fine, but she wasn't overlly confident in her answer. I write the RPAT on Monday, I have been studying English spelling, grammar tests, like mad. My spelling has gone to hell since high school. I pretty much haven't used my brain in 8 years. Math skills, and deductive reasoning is still good, thank God. Firefighting ain't brain surgery, I'll tell you that. Like they say, use it or lose it, I  sure never had to use it. Anybody here swinging on the fence about police or fire, get in touch, I am not a police officer, but I can tell you what firefighting is like in a big Canadian city.

Just think about it though, there are set standards for a reason. If the health services doesn't think your vision is strong enough to be a police officer, for the safety of other officers and the general public, they've probably made the best decision.

Go to your optometrist and see if you're a candidate for lasik. The mounties will accept that, but you'll be set back another 3 months, and a big chunk of change.

Well I made it, but it wasn't exactly through doing the test honestly

Umm.. hmm.. prehaps you should choose another line of work, seeing that honesty is infact a quality of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Download the pre-employment polygraph questioinaire; one of the questions concerns lying about medical conditions.

Even if you make it to the end, you will fail there.

rw4th has touched on something there concerning the polygraph. You will be required to explain/clarify this in the questionaire. If you do not the poly will catch you due to the nature of the questions they ask you (nuff said).

However what I would suggest is to call E-Div Health Services (604) 264-3111 ask for the Department and ask to speak to the nurse or if possible a doctor. Get the vision requirements from the horses mouth and go from there. Get an accurate eye test and if you meet the standard then be prepared to explain this tale of woe to your recruiter....don't worry just be honest tell it straight up and move on...what ever you do don't minimalize, conceal or lie or you will be fired with no hope ever of reapplying. They may put this down to you really wanting the job.

WRT the lazy eye.....
why don't you do what I did last year.... have it fixed.
Minor surgery, you're home by the end of the day.

before, my right eye would "fade" to the right (giving me great peripheral vision)
Near I was out by some 40degrees & 20 degrees for my distance....

After, it's like 1 degree & 0.....

The doc thought he'd have to do two operations on me - but the brain took care of the corrections
(my golf game & my skeet shooting is a lot better - thank you :))

Yeah, well not even the questionnaire.... they'll dig it out of you, not even using the questionnaire, trust me :)

WTF else do you need!! You've talked to them. They've told you what you need to do or meet. Quit asking us. They're the SME's, ask them. We're not Doctors or Recruiters for the Queen's Cowboys. Ask them, not us. Get off this channel for your answers. Thread closed.
If a serving RCMP should wish to answer your queries, they'll PM you.
