"Head down, bergen on, mind in neutral": The infantry body

Using literature from the recently developed "sociology of the body" and ethnographic material, this paper outlines various dimensions of the infantryman's bodily experience, including: how the body is disciplined and how it resists such a process. The acquisition of infantry bodily capital which is crucial to survival is portrayed, as well as forms of bodily release from danger and discomfort. This is followed by an examination of how infantrymen rationalize risking their bodies in armed conflict. The paper ends with a discussion of the usefulness of using theory to build an embodied account of the soldierly experience.
