China warplane in 'dangerous' intercept with US jet: Pentagon

Agence-France-Presse

Washington (AFP) - A Chinese fighter jet flew perilously close to a US military aircraft in international airspace this week in a "very dangerous" incident east of China's Hainan Island, the Pentagon said Friday."On August 19, an armed Chinese fighter jet conducted a dangerous intercept of a US Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft that was on a routine mission," spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told a news conference. It occurred about 135 miles (220 kilometers) east of Hainan, he said.

The armed Chinese warplane flew close to the surveillance aircraft three times, flying underneath the American plane, at the P-8's nose and then in parallel with the wingtips, less than 30 feet (nine meters) apart, he said. In approaching the P-8, the Chinese jet at one point performed a barrel roll, apparently to display its weapons, he said. "The Chinese jet also passed the nose of the P-8 at 90 degrees with its belly toward the P-8 Poseidon, we believe to make a point of showing its weapons load," he said. The intercept was "very, very close, very dangerous," Kirby added.

The Soviets just did the same thing a few weeks ago IIRC. Now the Chinese.

I wonder if other countries are starting to view the US as an impotent paper tiger, that they no longer regard as a dominating force.

Apparently one particular PLAAF wing commander is behind all the buzzing of US and JASDF aircraft by PLAAF planes lately:

Call Sign 'Rogue': Pentagon Says One Chinese Commander Responsible for Spate of Air Confrontations
BY GORDON LUBOLD AUGUST 22, 2014 - 06:52 PM

A Chinese PLA wing commander has repeatedly harassed U.S. military aircraft in the South China Sea, most recently directing a Chinese jet fighter to do a Top Gun-like barrel roll that came dangerously close to an American patrol jet on a routine mission, the U.S. Defense Department confirmed on Friday, Aug. 22.

An armed Chinese fighter jet conducted "a dangerous intercept" of a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon submarine-hunting plane on a mission Aug. 19 in international waters near Hainan Island in the South China Sea, according to the Pentagon.

Here's the US response to the recent interception of a USN P8 by a Chinese PLANAF J11. The USS Carl Vinson will be the 2nd USN carrier currently in the western Pacific/Japan alongside the USS George Washington and the rest of the 7th Fleet.

Second US aircraft carrier sent to China amid seething tension

By ANI | ANI – Mon, Aug 25, 2014

Washington, Aug 25 (ANI): The United States Navy is reportedly sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Asia Pacific region following a dangerous aerial intercept between a Chinese jet and one of its P-8 surveillance craft.

The U.S. navy said that the strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson, left San Diego for the Pacific on Friday as part of a "planned" deployment.

While Chinese Defense Spokesperson Yang Yujun maintained that the Chinese interceptor was just making a "regular identification and verification" of the Navy P-8 aircraft, Pentagon termed it "a dangerous and unprofessional encounter," reported The Washington Free Beacon.
The encounter took place 135 miles east of Hainan Island.

And this ~ wasted (and expensive) US military effort ~ may be what the Chinese intended. China doesn't need (or want, I think) any sort of real, direct confrontation with the USA but it does want to do whatever it can, wherever it can, using whatever means (or proxies) it can to discomfit the USA or to upset its plans and actions.

Mind you did not the US just do the same to some Iranian jets peacefully exercising their rights?

Yawn.... the People's Daily, along with Xinhua/CCTV, up to their old dirty tricks.  :boring:

US spy plane may have triggered Chinese jet interception by dropping sonar buoy: state media

A Chinese fighter jet’s interception of a US Navy sub-hunter aircraft was possibly triggered when the American plane dropped a sonar surveillance system into the South China Sea, according to state media.

A Chinese J-11 fighter jet reportedly flew within metres of the US Navy P-8 Poseidon when it performed acrobatic manoeuvres around it over international waters east of Hainan Island last week, triggering a war of words between the two nations.

US officials called the act “aggressive” and “dangerous” but China denied its pilot did anything wrong and said the manoeuvre was a response to “large-scale and highly frequent close-in reconnaissance” by US aircraft.

A report in the Beijing-based Global Times, a newspaper affiliated with the ruling Communist Party’s mouthpiece, People’s Daily, quoted an anonymous military expert who said that Chinese pilots have adopted a series of standard interception guidelines after years of standoffs with US aircraft.
