Multi-National Division-Baghdad will temporarily replace a wounded senior U.S. commander.

Col. B.D. Farris, commander of 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, was conducting a site survey of concrete barrier emplacements in the Addhamiyah District of Baghdad on Thursday when he was shot, according to information released Monday by the Army.

He was struck by a single bullet, treated and medically evacuated, the release said.

Farris was reported to be in stable condition as of Monday.

“He’s a great leader,” Maj. Gen. Joseph Fil, MND-B commander, said in a news release. “Our formations are filled with great leaders. As unfortunate as this event is, we train our soldiers to step up when needed.”

Col. John G. Castles II will take temporary command of the “Falcon Brigade,” the release said. No further details were provided.

“Commanding in a combat zone is a monumental responsibility, but I have full confidence in the capability and commitment of John to lead his paratroopers in the wake of this event,” Fil said.

Castles is transferring to the job in Baghdad from the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., according to the release.

Fil said he and other senior leaders of MND-B are focused on securing the people of Baghdad.

“Our commitment to the safety and security of the Iraqi people in Baghdad remains our paramount concern,” Fil said. “We remain committed to this mission. This attack only strengthens our resolve to eliminate extremist elements from the Iraqi capital.”

The brigade deployed to Iraq in January and was originally scheduled to return to Fort Bragg, N.C., in September.

Under troop rotations announced in early April, the unit will spend a year in theater.
