A Deeply Fractured US

I'm not sure what kind of statement this was supposed to be but, I guess, mission accomplished:

Georgia Monument That Some Call 'America's Stonehenge' Damaged By Bomb

The Georgia Guidestones monument near Elberton was damaged by an explosive device, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

ATLANTA (AP) — A rural Georgia monument that some conservative Christians have criticized as satanic and that others have dubbed “America’s Stonehenge” was bombed before dawn on Wednesday in an attack that turned one of its four granite panels into rubble.

The Georgia Guidestones monument near Elberton was damaged by an explosive device, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. The Elbert County Emergency Management Agency said the explosion was seen on video cameras shortly after 4 a.m. Pictures and aerial video show the destroyed panel on the ground.

I didn't know the Taliban had a branch office in Georgia?

Sorry Kat, I know you were being humorous.

Given the open border down south, there's people representing something like 151 countries come through so far.

The article is dated April 2022, lots of other stuff. They've just had the two biggest fentanyl seizures ever, so that can be added to whatever the article says.

"Since Joe Biden took office and started implementing his radical open border policies, 42 people on the terrorist watchlist have been apprehended attempting to enter the United States through our southern border illegally."

There was talk today, biden might finish the border wall, in California, for newsom. Texas is deploying the NatGrd and LEO along their border to intercept Illegals and take them back to a Border Crossing for deportation

It was more a reference to their fetish for destroying monuments and erasing history, but I get you.

Notwithstanding the desire of some to connect it to the Bamiyan Buddhas and Stonehenge, the monument is more in the league of the Cadillac Ranch or the world's largest blue ox statue, wherever that might be. When wondering why it was destroyed, keep in mind that destroying monuments has become a bit of a sport lately. People don't get to lower the civility bar only for themselves.

'Crisis-Industrial Complex"... my favourite phrase of the week so far :)

America’s crisis-industrial complex

Are alarmist narratives about a “new civil war” obscuring the real battle in US politics: the fight for democracy?

One of the biggest challenges facing political analysis in the US today is to sort through the distortions of cynical politics, a hypertrophied security state and a degraded information ecology. Much commentary now succumbs to a vicious feedback loop that links inflated threats and viral mobbing on social media, to party operatives and opportunistic pundits trolling for outrages to serve as campaign fodder for the next election. A right-wing grievance factory (embodied by outlets like Fox News) stokes fears about a loss of status and order resulting from attacks on racial hierarchy, normative sexuality and gender roles, and traditional emblems of authority like the police. Meanwhile liberals and progressives warn of fascism descending, but struggle to distinguish between what is merely impolitic and offensive, and existential dangers or genocidal threats.

The results speak for themselves. We might characterise the last two and half decades in the world’s most affluent states – and the US in particular – as a period of crisis compression and rising fatalism. The onset of the millennium did not bring about the apocalypse foretold by Y2K fantasists, but yielded instead to slow rolling catastrophe with endemic features. We are people stalked by periodic financial collapse, destructive weather events, imminent civic violence and airborne death. Region-wasting hurricanes, tsunamis and wildfires are the backdrop to daily life on our warming planet. Riotous mass protests against governing authority expose the illegitimate face of ostensibly democratic forms of rule. Americans who learned to bowl alone, faced rising mid-life mortality, self-medicated with opioids, got locked up and gunned down in the old de-industrialised urban core, struggled to make rent, stockpiled guns, trolled for the next Columbine, Sandy Hook or Uvalde in the suburbs and hinterlands, in turn conjured Trump as a kind of perverse mirror. The promise to “Make America Great Again”, unlike Obama’s enjoining “Hope and Change”, or even Bush’s dream of “A New American Century”, represented a conscious involution – a not entirely inadvertent mockery of the pretensions of those prior idealistic schemes, confirmation that the liberal patrimony has been spent.

It is the darkness of this vision that has given rise to a cottage industry of criers warning of impending civil war.

Nah, it's the internet that did that. The street-corner apocalypse preachers have always been with us; they just had difficulty reaching large audiences in the good old days.

Populism runs through Anglo-Saxon politics - It is the defining characteristic of Anglo-Saxon politics.

The Establishment merely tries to stay afloat.

Well, this didn't take long ....

If her argument is upheld, then she should be ticketed for transporting ". . . a child who is younger than eight years of age, unless the child is taller than four feet, nine inches, and does not keep the child secured during the operation of the vehicle in a child passenger safety seat system according to the instructions of the manufacturer of the safety seat system . . .", in violation of Sec. 545.412 of the Texas Transportation Code.

Well, this didn't take long ....

Its going to be an interesting case.

I quote the article:
Though Texas penal code recognizes an unborn child as a person, the state's transportation code doesn’t.
"Different judges might treat this differently. This is unchartered territory we're in now,” said Dallas appellate lawyer Chad Ruback. "There is no Texas statute that says what to do in this situation. The Texas Transportation Code has not been amended recently to address this particular situation. Who knows? Maybe the legislature will in the next session."

Well, in Texas, I think she has a point. I bet you the State Transportation Code also has references to hitching your horse in public, etc. she could also argue that a human caving provides similar if not superior protection than a rigid child car seat…

... "Since Joe Biden took office and started implementing his radical open border policies, 42 people on the terrorist watchlist have been apprehended attempting to enter the United States through our southern border illegally." ...
So Team 🐘 is saying border controls under the current administration are working if the terrorist watchlist folks are getting caught, right? :)

In all seriousness, the whack-jobs blowing up the concrete plinth-thing represent a tiny bit of "the right" - just like I don't paint the whole Christian community with the same brush because of the Westboro splinters ....

Worth keeping an eye on for the worst crazies? Yup - just like any other group where only a handful can do a lot of bad stuff. All like this? Nope.

Unintended consequences of The Supremes' decision ...
Further unintended consequences, a friend of my wife had another miscarriage. She couldn’t get the procedure done to remove the dead baby from inside her in her home state. She needed to drive 10hrs to New York (her OB/GYN had a friend in NY that would do it). As they have another child her husband needed to stay home, so this woman had to drive 10 hrs have the procedure done, and drive back right after.

I’m a Pro-Life supporter, but activities like this make it hard to support State laws that only victimize families who are already suffering from a loss.

Sorry to hear that about your wife's friend.

You seem to be applying way more common sense and understanding of real-life cause-and-effect than some pro-life folks who seem to be more ideological & rigid about this.

There's worries about those who may end up wanting to see less birth control made available, with follow-on actions by those in power (don't know about what else is in the legislation to say if this'll be enough, or a Trojan horse with other stuff like omnibus bills here in Canada).

I read about some working to restrict at least the chemicals and/or IUDs & I haven't seen any legislators going after condoms publicly yet. This is what leads to people on the other side of the issue suspecting motives other than saving the already conceived.
