2 men hack soldier to death in UK, are then shot and wounded by police

Totally sickening act of pure evil. :'( I worry about CF personnel self-identifying as military when off-duty and in public.  :( Just watched this documentary set in Britain. Rather long but well done. I thought it was relevant but Mods please move, if misplaced. The doc leaves me with the...

    Syria Superthread [merged]

I don't think it's the Saudi government under the present aging king exporting the "troublemakers;" rather it's wealthy Saudis--the one's who have the money/clout, hate the west, hate the king and can't wait for him to die and hold extreme Wahabi religious views.  I would agree however that the...

    Saudi Terrorist Escapes to Yemen?

The Saudi Press Agency isn't the most reliable but posting this about a recent female terrorist's escape from the kingdom and her claim to be joining Al Qaeda in Yemen. Apparently she's tweeting about it. http://www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentid=20130405159991

What book are you reading now?

Thanks AGB. The reading request is for myself.  I will look for that book. We're very limited in what we can teach or show our students--no films, no music, no art, no phys. ed. A very complicated country where everybody/everything seems to operate on two levels.

What book are you reading now?

Does anyone have any suggestions for reading about the history or politics of Saudi Arabia? I teach females there and have read "Girls of Riyadh" and Jean Sasson's Princess Trilogy. Thanks.

Qur'an blunder has made Afghan mission more dangerous

Posting from Riyadh, Saudia Arabia. This incident is having a ripple effect though the danger is not  critical. Mostly confined to disparaging comments from Muslim colleagues. Saturday evening while flipping through the satellite tv stations in my apartment I caught a call-in talk show on a...

    Chinese Military,Political and Social Superthread

I think you are right GAP. Those children and youth who are products of the one child policy won't tolerate a repressive system as they grow and age. They want an open country and they've been raised with much more freedom than their ancestors.

    Three Cups Of Tea

Mortensen's work is almost a miracle by today's standards.  To think, he started the Central Asia Institute while living from his car (and a storage locker).  With zero dollars and a typewriter he wrote 500 letters-and got one lucky answer back.  Haven't looked recently at the statistics, but...

Muslim states push for UN action on 'Islamophobia'

Ayaan Hirsi Ali's an amazing human being--suffered many losses including the loss to some of  her "feminine parts" which were mutilated at a young age--in the name of an extremist brand of Islam.
