“Brigadier Hill had driven the brigade, including 9th Battalion, through a murderous regimen of physical training. All ranks ran everywhere, climbed cliffs, ran assault courses again and again, ran long distances carrying full packs. Brigadier Hill led them personally on 50-mile marches: 25 miles out, a two-hour rest, then 25 miles back... the battalion quickly grew very hard, hard enough to pass Speedy Hill’s standard for physical competence: 112 miles in 21/2 days carrying 60-pound packs.”
